Animal Portrait Artist Working in Graphite Pencil
I am an animal portrait artist creating detailed, hand-drawn artwork in graphite pencil. My work centres on dogs, cats and other animals, with each portrait carefully developed to reflect character, expression and subtle detail through traditional drawing techniques.
About My Work
My approach to animal portraiture is rooted in observation and patience. Rather than aiming for stylised representations, I focus on accuracy, texture and balance, allowing the subject’s individuality to emerge naturally through pencil and paper.
Â
Working in graphite offers a level of control that suits this process. Fine lines, layered shading and tonal variation are used to describe form and depth, resulting in artwork that feels calm, refined and enduring.
Artistic Style and Drawing Process
Every portrait begins with a careful review of reference photographs. I look beyond surface detail, paying attention to posture, expression and the way light interacts with the subject.
The drawing process is gradual and deliberate. Graphite is built up in layers, allowing softness in some areas and precision in others. This balance is particularly important when drawing fur, eyes and facial features, which often define the personality of the animal.
Â
All artwork is drawn entirely by hand using professional graphite pencils on fine art paper.
Commissions, Prints and Cards
In addition to bespoke pet portrait commissions, I offer a small collection of fine art prints and greeting cards reproduced from original drawings. These pieces allow the artwork to be enjoyed in different formats while retaining the detail and character of the original pencil work.
Â
Commissions are created individually and tailored to each client, while prints and cards are produced to a high standard using quality materials.
Why Graphite Works So Well for Animal Portraits
Graphite pencil is particularly well suited to animal portraiture. Its monochrome nature places emphasis on form, texture and contrast, rather than colour, which helps draw attention to expression and structure.
Â
Pencil portraits also have a timeless quality. The subtlety of graphite allows the artwork to sit comfortably in a wide range of spaces and styles, making it a popular choice for meaningful, long-lasting pieces.
Client Experience and Feedback
Many clients choose to commission a portrait as a way to celebrate a bond with a much-loved animal. Feedback often highlights the sense of likeness, attention to detail and the thoughtful nature of the finished artwork.
Â
Each portrait is approached with care and respect for the subject, whether it is intended as a gift, a keepsake or a personal commission.
My Passion
True artistry lies in capturing not just an image, but an essence. Every animal, whether a cherished companion or a wild creature, carries a presence, a spirit, and a beauty that deserves to be remembered with the same reverence as fine portraiture.
My work is devoted to distilling that essence into something lasting. Each commission is a bespoke piece, created with meticulous attention to detail, crafted to reflect the individuality and elegance of its subject.
Whilst initially my chosen medium was coloured pencils, I have since developed a preference for graphite and charcoal, which allow me to explore different tones and textures in my work.
I look forward to receiving your cherished animal photos and having the honour of creating a lasting, loving memory for you.
